First numbness
unease disbelief shifting
and seething beneath
unheard conversations
at nearby tables
still numbness
white sun glaring hard
off the road nearly empty
but for a few
we took the wrong direction
clinging numbness
and I park my car
beside an uneasy carmine sea
ripples lapping at my tires
and weep
with relief
later at a red light
silver car blue decal
in her rearview mirror
the driver’s eyes meet mine
she smiles
and I smile back at her
