Surf (Day 900)

Loose waves unspool   spilling

across a sheen of coral sand

in succession   dawning edges

frothing and fizzing   deepening

into midnight translucence

pausing   retreating   measuring

unknowable distances

between one breath and another

Swim (Day 899)

around copper shoulders

clouds ripple   reflections

dancing in a topaz sky

in the middle   eyes closed

against the stinging sun

floating easily   we

drift on the tense surface

underwater rumble

pulsing gently in our ears

All ears (Day 898)

stilted   disjointed   over-easy
soft and almost slackened
finding balance and balance again
the old walk and stumble
getting hotter and hotter   funny
you never felt that way yourself
before this   resting
in a state of conscious abandon
just for a moment   tipping
toward fortune   only a problem
if someone’s watching   you
almost dropped into page-long
ecstasy   sinking like gneiss
into deep-sucking silt   so don’t
plumb it   this lost afternoon
when language is all ears

Twilight, fireflies (Day 897)

River of heat scours
the arid world
whispering
into purple night   secret
lights rise   sparking
like tiny angels   startling
as peacocks   flaunting
their unmanageable
burden of lush plumage

Drawn by sunrise (Day 896)

All night, they walked,
drawn by sunrise—unseen
waves hammering
at the darkness—wondering
what they were, would be,
until the rose-gold light,
a hopeful song, played along
the horizon, and, in unison,
they turned toward it

Angel (Day 895)

It’s Day 895, and we have another guest poet. My lovely friend, Cynthia Dawn Griffin, prolific author of books, blogs, and poetry, submitted today’s poem and image. Visit her website to read more of her writing: https://cynthiadgriffin.com/

Angel
I see you are having a bad day.
I see that frown.
I see those hunched shoulders.
Don’t snap at me. I didn’t do it.
I know this sucks.
I know you’re hurting.
Don’t you know? It’s going to get better.
Maybe not today.
Maybe not tomorrow,
But it will.
How do I know? You ask.
Because I’m your angel, Dear One.
And I’ll be right here,
Each step of the way.
You are not alone.

As for me, I’m off to do a little writing, too, so I can maintain my poem-a-day streak. After 894 poems in as many days, I’m not about to give up now!

Hard-won wisdom (Day 894)

Robin pushes back

against the night,

asking questions

only cat can answer,

but, prowling darkness

same as light, through

twilit underbrush, she

keeps her hard-won

wisdom to herself.
