On the Alte Donau (Day 106)

Photo: Public domain

In a rented boat
On the Alte Donau,
We traced the outlines
Of the shore, and found
Our own private corner.
The river cooled
Our skin, feverish
With new love,
After the last shards
Of winter's piercing cold
Had become little more
Than a curious memory,
And July afternoons
Grew heavy, ponderous
As a pear, hanging, golden
With juice, at the tip
Of a fruit-laden branch.

Now, the warm night
is calling, like a bell, singing:
'Come with me
and bathe in my stars...'
Hands entwined,
Let's meander along
The paths to the shore
Where you first
took me into your arms.
Face to face, we'll dance
In the current's embrace,
While the Alte Danou
Cools us once more.
