Cicada husks
obscured the walkway
an exoskeletal patina
pecan-dark and crunchy
Howling she stomped out
the pointless icons
unstoppable as
a howling December flood
Behind mullioned windows
the family's lesser matron
pausing in the middle of her tea
pronounced:
Hoarding words in a notebook
is not the same as preparing
for an inevitable future
