Rain taps nervously on the window,
reminding me of an unusual silence
another listless day, tasting of ozone
and buttered toast, slightly burnt,
slumps toward night, breathing tepid
promises of billowing May, heady
with flutterings, and afternoon storms
bending these gold-tipped trees
