Friday Nights (Day 1017)

and now twilight cools the sun-bleached sky

and she watches as he fights

across a broad swathe of dry dimpled sand

slowly making his way to where she waits

and in her heart he is perfect   a boy  sad and sweet

and a little tragic   she remembers how he laughed

at the crashing waves   expecting them to remain

unchanged   always following the shoreline

in the same graceful arc because

he liked it that way  but time touches everything

and some days she worries she is merely a toy

an old plaything he might toss   forgotten

into a corner   but then he reaches for her hand

or flashes that sideways smile that means:

Don’t tell anyone...it’s our secret

and she watches as he shades his eyes

with one hand   squinting into the setting sun

finding her   correcting his course as if

she is his North Star

and she thinks: Friday nights never change

all these years later and here I am   still standing

by the corner   dressed in red   hoping he might

drive up and say Jump in—let’s go for a ride
