Just a glimpse (Day 407)

Once a smooth
emerald-velvet breast
—where silver lights
played and twigs rattled,
concrete crackled,
and sometimes,
sweetness sang
—deserts now splinter
into angry glass, newly
mown sand transformed
by a blast of blazing
heat such as the world
has seldom known.

Watercolors (Day 390)

Where the edges
are not, there now
twist and turn, into cavernous
echoing chambers, bleeding
rivulets of umber diverging into
creases that vein the vast,
opaline expanse of
love’s cold, hard floor,
over which we slipped and
ran, laughing until we cried, our
seawater tears blooming like watercolors.

Blue (Day 351)

blue
blew through me
I knew the underside
of a frozen stream
seeping through the sky
where its seams were
still unfinished
new
I knew the rhythm
of your blood
inside the landscape
of your veins
a pattern barely realized
yet recognizing my disguise
left you somehow
diminished

Twice as Cold (Day 327)

There, stern water, gray
as iron, and twice as cold
—boldness froths like
whitecaps at your telling,
yarns of hard-won wisdom
beat black pearls for treasure,
chests of gold, hard-hearted
gems for warmth, their value
neither won nor sold,
nor useful when you’re growing
old with no delightful company
to make you laugh until you cry,
to warm your sheets when
bitter cold creeps beneath
your unsealed door.

Secret Roads (Day 288)

Trickling valleys slide
toward the water, dark
as cedars standing
sentinel, concealing
secret roads
and urgent passageways,
branches
calming the nervous,
fog-brightened night.
Here, joy turns
to wonder, grief
to contemplation.
New growth, a tender
haze of green, emerges
before the forest’s
detached gaze,
in stillness,
ancient consolations.

Sea-swept (Day 279)

they danced at midnight
on a sea-swept isle  all coral
haze and lagging rhythms
less than one day’s sail beyond
the bounds of measurable time

into the early morning
hours like embers glow
their rolling hues diffused against
the crumbled walls of a secret

beach embraced by headlands
and a jealous sky   they unwrapped
the gifts they carried  unfolding
tales half by half  attentive
to the rushing surf

each listening  awestruck  to the sea
hushed and tender  whispering
from deep inside the chambered shell
of the other’s upturned heart

Half the Battle (Day 272)

When prepared     You’ve fought half the battle
Don’t you             Worry about me, while you’re away
Make your own    Luck, fate, or invention, they’re your’s, this
Day                       Break, these good intentions, the shiny gold trophy.

The Starry Night (Day 219)

The brown serge, warm in the deluge,
grew clammy and rumpled easily
when squeezed into the five-thirty’s
ever-crowded, cramped seats.
Trillions of stars watched as he
—shoulder to shoulder with neighbors
and strangers in the second car from
the end—relaxed into the swaying ride
down the coast toward the unknowable
emptiness of this Friday evening.
Somewhere, his seat-mate’s newspaper
announced with barely suppressed glee,
a devastating something or other
had caused property damage and,
almost certainly, loss of life.
Somewhere else, right now, he imagined,
a plane was touching down on searing,
crackled tarmac, bumping toward a terminal,
fuselage already covered in red dust,
overhead bins clunk-clunking, heralding
the beginning: of vacations, of adventures,
of memories of a lifetime. Unbelievably,
that lifetime was no longer his; no longer
his, the smile, the camera, the deep bliss
of the first, exhausted flop onto the hotel bed,
the sigh of delight, the de rigeur perusal
of nightstand drawers and room service menu.
Trillions of stars still watched, as the silver line
of his train pulled up to a darkened station,
spilled a swarm of damp, disgruntled
commuters onto the pavement, and heaved
itself southward. Hitching his collar higher,
fingers wound tightly around the house keys
in his pocket, he paused, took one slow breath,
then turned left and headed uphill, trudging
slowly upward into the starry night.
