Yellowjackets (Day 88)

Image: Sankyaku

Yellowjacket
             circling,
always three
     times,
before
     moving on
             to more
    manageable prey:
a succulent beetle
     or a crumb
dropped by
some long-ago hiker

Brief Encounter, 1986 (Day 86)

The beginning
was a seed
of attraction
planted in possibility
watered, soon sprouted

we kissed, changed,
and washed
some serious deep feelings

his face surprised me—
that even, light
displeasure,
brutally honest

instinctively,
I disguised
hope with a mask
of bored disregard
and looked
toward
the television's electric
blue radiance

Industrial Flat (Day 66)

He just sits there and reads
the newspaper in our industrial flat
up north. Outside our windows,
the neighborhood blends in
with the low, pewter sky
and the book of poems
I've been reading.

From where I sit, I see
flocks of flustered starlings,
yards of disintegrating trains,
and the memories of workers
who once stood in line,
coffee steaming from between
their parted lips, to punch in
at the time-clock downstairs.

(Said clock left intact in
what I often imagine as
an attempt at architectural irony).

Some of the memories are vulnerable,
some blocked or shocking, while others
are blue as sea glass. The clouds shift and
settle, exposing a sliver of bright sky,
like a sudden smile.

He puts down his paper and sighs.
I get up from my favorite chair,
cross to the gray tweed sofa,
and sit next to him.

No Discernible Difference (Day 34)

Someplace far
away in a bamboo
forest, fibrous leaves,
each an emerald
dagger, whisper
among themselves
in a language I have not
yet learned to speak.

Someplace, a man looks
up and sees burning oceans
of bleached ochre sand,
a taciturn desert realm
whose wealth of emptiness
baffles the eye
and leaves the mind
to it's own
devices.

Someplace distant
as the long-buried past
a vast prairie of ice and snow
melts into the lowering sky,
enfolding the world
in a pale pearl shell—
no discernible difference
between up and down,
left and right,
you and me.
