When November Comes (Day 446)

Even the silence is quiet today.
The last of Autumn’s leaves flocked
and flew away in a late-winter storm,
so this afternoon’s peace remains
unmarred by their bird-like scuttling
on the root-buckled sidewalk.

From my glass of tea, just within reach
on a slatted wood table, condensation
trickles and falls onto the damp,
shaded  grass below, its intermittent
drip drip marking these gentle moments.

And, though I can remember the bitter
feel of February, my body is incapable
of knowing it—with this dappled light
insinuating itself so intimately into my
blood—nor do I want to. There will be
time enough for frost and snow,
when November comes again.

Angel (Day 359)

Hands flower heat expands
Mist annoints an oatmeal angel
One poised dewdrop succeeds

Sirens call joy children pout
Suddenly brown petals play

Torn committees flutter
Green shadows tax the humid wind
Nearby frogs are chiding

Reclaimed (Day 353)

Reclaimed by the wind
this hot air, knocked down
hard hand in mine,
lifeless rain leaks from
the clouds, faceless seconds
trickling down
the slopes of a slow hour,
snowcaps slipping into the sea,
descending the ladder of souls,
while fertile land grows arid
in our climbing sun’s vice-like grip.

Chrysalis (Day 220)

From all sides
beleaguered  he curls inward
sea anemone  protecting
its tender center
chrysalis  undefended  vulnerable
somehow valiant in pure
inevitability  facing down storms
exposed  yet diffident
his strategy  detachment
rolled and coiled
in deepest dark
in singular solitude  it begins
in a crystal spark
a listless centering  elemental
listening will be his
salvation  intuition  the springtime of
his moist-winged fluttering
carried aloft
by a grateful current

Shades (Day 201)

shades of neighborhood
we see day in day out
these gardens parks
forests swaying gently
in the valley's breath
gnarled from resisting
mountainside Novembers
chestnuts clover green
blue tinged sycamores
maples dark as merlot
gathering a harvest
of white heat billowing
deep into the night
from concrete ribbons
draped about their roots

Have You Heard (Day 198)

have you heard
the planet
affects far more
than your heart
if you’re a woman
you can sense
a pulling away from
a getting dissolved by
the plentiful cause
you may not have
heard they don’t tell
you this stage is
preventable reversible
and—you can see—
ugly so ugly

Haiku for Day 174

Beneath an unbruised snow
Where my toes are pink and warm
Softly, you gather me

A moment, driving (Day 155)

The hills stand, black,
against a silver sky,
Dust rides hot wind
where combines cut
the grass
beside the highway.
The air takes on
a ripe and leathery
scent, rich patina on
the maturing day.

Cloudburst (Day 154)

Cloudbursts
Fleeting fugitive
Sheer cool deluge
Wrapped in warm wind
Singing setting stray leaves dancing
Blossom shaped splashes bloom
Like forgetful angels
Then softly
Fade
