First Crocus (Poem 306)

Before the advancing army,
a single scout crouches
under the gaunt maple
and tests the air
surreptitiously, 
wary of dangers and
inclement weather, 
carrying the mystery of
the ages, heart silently 
opening to the possibility 
of grace.
