keep trying
if it’s meant to be
otherwise forever
hear the promises
without concern
like giving
up near the end
of acceptance
stay move
who would want to?

November beckons promising
freedom
in shades of gray & brown
summer’s baroque
branches & vines stripped
down to necessities
at last respite
from July’s cruel glare
August’s desultory meanderings
harvested the hopes
of growing things striving upward
fulfilled the vows earnest
& feigned of an intricate web
in whose center we are not

noon’s harsh glare
softens cooling
into welcome dusk
the world falls away
how many restless
hours we spend
settling becoming
ourselves again

Hidden behind this curtain
of green and green
a shameful gash gleams red
where spring flowers grew
where acres of ancient woods
sheltered hidden lives
are freshly-mangled mounds
of trunks and tangled roots
the cloak of greed drapes
heavy on these hills savaged
by decree by men
whose empty buildings echo
like vacant hearts

tomorrow we found high on a totem
a fearless heart
carved of bone someone will leave it
on a mountain on the moon
full and ripe as a plum a distant refrain
we will wind it in silk this gift we bore
into a tangled mass of yesterdays
