Outlines (Day 744)

What I observed
fell together  a collage
of book covers   toasted marshmallows
snow-covered benches

What I knew
bound and stitched
an album of sparrows  crumbling castles
sea caves
paved with pristine sand
and expectation

What I remembered
scattered around  me
on the floor  incomplete copies  notes
of masterpieces  scribbled outlines
marking the contours of a life

Insistent (720)

insistent    winter
showers’ campfire crackle
in strands of crisp brown leaves
tapping   tapping
the shoulders of reticent
January woods   consider
the fullness of
each shining drop
each gentle touch   deep  dusky
subterranean whisper
wake up   wake up

Suburban (Day 718)

like a flippant roommate  poverty

cavorts

   beyond affluent suburbs

where  in exposed brick corners  giggling

gangs of butter-blonde

   drugstore sirens

hoard generous roots amid

   the barbed-wire

      of deconstructed personalies

Like a curtain (Day 714)

Remember this          afternoon falling
feeling something     like a curtain
more than                   the leaves
you know                    how they tremble

A page, turned (Day 713)

A page, turned, in a silent room,
abrades the thin, taut air

A broad, Shakespearean stage whisper,
complete with wink and smile

All the while, leviathan clouds traverse
the sky, without a trace of sound

Take Aim and Speak (Day 704)

Take aim and speak

heart-piercing silver lines

down corridors awash

in darkness  find your way

by touch  slow-sliding progress

marked on smoke-stained stones

let jasper waves douse your

flames amidst the ermine silence

of a pale and fluttering heart

where once echoed

the fall of silvery chimes

Haiku for Day 700

Moon-bleached blossoms drip

Stars hide their cold smokeless flames

Night flings useless rain

Yesterday and tomorrow (Day 699)

Yesterday and tomorrow whisper

the muted hum of bumblebees inspecting

    a fragrant bank of honeysuckle

the purr of a cat stretched full-length

in a pool of morning sunlight

the soft buzz of a hovering hummingbird

    testing a heavy-headed lilac

today and tomorrow tell me their secrets

    in hushed library voices

while today remains silent, tranquil, a mirror

    coolly reflecting, in elegant detail,

the truths already known to my heart

Under a blue star (Day 698)

there   a blue star   over the doorway
where shadows were thirsting for light
night was well and truly tired   over
much too early   unsated   slumping
defeatedly toward five o’clock
shadows falling pale into an empty day
until   again   these shades come
crashing the party under a blue star

Another Page Torn (Day 679)

It was another day

another foxed page

torn from a book

shelved in the attic of

a seldom-visited library

A day as tender

as my mother’s hand

in mine soft and fragile

as a tiny gray bird

newly hatched

A day too tough

to nibble or chew

dry and hard

as the pigs’ ears

for which my dog

begs and yearns

It was another day

but now it’s done

night drawn about me

like a shawl comforting

dark and promising

a warmer tomorrow

Wet Snow (667)

yes no wet snow yes between

my toes sand fingers

linger waves toss a gray

and restless sea to see

across those waves

a sunrise waits for me

across those waves of yes I

float the sun orange tide

high float and ride a restless

yes a heaving in between

flowing unseen west glancing

yes no rising sunlight circles

dancing on my unseen sky
