How I Am (Day 335)

Among the only sounds in this cool, wide lobby:
elevators humming a hydraulic lullabye,
doors shushing the few people waiting to emerge,
to enter, to go up, to go home.

Silk forsythia, white noise, acoustic music—barely
discernable, gently distracting, insulating, building
walls where there are only doors, windows where
there are only empty spaces between museum prints
and mirrors.

People don’t look at each other, here.
We discreetly avert our eyes or, when pressed,
serve up wan, unfocused smiles to those unfamiliar
with our unwritten rules of non-engagement.

Below a bright EXIT sign, a door swings open.
A dark-haired, middle-aged man scans the room,
sees me, smiles.

We climb two flights of stairs (he likes to stretch
his legs now and then, and knows I don’t mind),
arriving in a hallway notable only for its red carpeting
patterned with gold and black.

In his office, we sit, make settling noises, appreciate
the crisp fall day. Then: “How’ve you been?” he asks,
eyes glinting with good humor and his greatest gift—
his superpower—an honest desire to know,
to listen,
to me telling him
how I am.

The world is full of brilliant people who choose to spend their lives
helping others. I am so grateful for them.

Unbroken (Day 299)

imagine
having a heart
that had never been
broken
or a spirit
that had known
only joy

the topography
of a life
like that
unmarred by yearning
unchanging   unearned
a bleak and
featureless expanse
as far as the eye could see

like awakening
yawning and stretching
into a nightmare
of eternal ennui
from a dream
rich with longing
and love
and loss

When the Magic Ends (Day 282)

When the magic
ends
and the music
winds down, find
the one who’s still
around,
helping you sweep up
the fairy dust
and
carrying dishes
to the sink.
Choose him.
You may not think
so now, but he
is the answer
to those prayers
and wishes—
the one
who stays
after the party,
instead of leaving
you
to clean up
the mess
while he follows
the rest of the crowd.

Talisman (Day 257)

I am unspooling
into taupe  liquifying in
an aqueous netherworld
of subtlety  gentle understanding
and ancient knowing dwell here
among the crystal glimmers
of possibility
don’t birth me into your world
of fire  don’t drag me kicking
and screaming
against  against  against your
hot  cold
white  black
right  wrong
sears my eyes  their unquestioning
allegiance wakes me late at night
in a sweat of skepticism
no  allow me to remain
wallowing in what I do
not know  wrapped in gray layers
of of hidden meaning
a gleaming necklace of human
teeth my talisman against
the dreams of others

Poison Slurry (Day 240)

your words  they lie
as well as
sit  a pale egg
unhatched
the poison slurry
fills the cracks
appalling  we are
spit-and-polish
egos  where a small
few head
he goes all in
they follow even unto
silver-plated truth he
traded in
exchange for
long-since missing wits

The Dog & I (Day 224)

You see, the dog
        & I took
                a walk
        this evening

Our neighborhood
        came out
                to greet
       her—all of her
favorite friends

& she just
        smiled & smiled
                with that
        particularly canine
breed of joy

At that moment
        a thought fluttered
                 down & alit
        on my shoulder:
This
is feeling
like Everything is
going to
be
all right

Angels Admitted (Day 222)

In these hours of fascination
the mountains, running north
to south to north, have had
the uncommon good sense—or
imagination—to admit angels.
Not to be left out, watery realms
from oceans to streams also
extended gracious invitations,
but leave no doubt about it:
it was the mountains who
started the trend. Now, when
the very air seethes with wishes
and threats, an angel on bended
knee, can be found in every puddle,
on every street corner. Do you doubt
the truth of this? Then drive beyond
the clipped seams of your cities,
into a rolling countryside on a cool
autumn morning. There, in the small
valleys and gullies, where creeks trickle
and rivulets flow, you will see, with
your very own eyes: angels rising
in ribbons from the earth, and
on the hushed air, their misty sighs.

Are You the Same (Day 213)

are you
the same one
or did i succumb
to thin gray sleep
at dawn  and dream
your name

look back
at the day  drawn
bright  askew
how  in the damp
blue evening
we can be
the light

I Can't Express (Day 208)

Your eyes   I can’t
express  recall
myself another story
it’s not always fair
to see
where were you
heading to shine
let me light
your path
through the forest
at night   how can
we all exist
in a world
so full  so full
