Asleep (Poem 170)

Asleep at the wheel
of fortune I sing
songs of three a.m.
when you wake
up heart pounding
sure that the
sound is echoing
down the hall
where photos hang
in tarnished frames
then settle
back with a sigh
relief and abandon
yourself again
to the whims
of your dreams
